Octogenarian jumps to death in Anambra

An octogenarian by name Victoria Ilione on Tuesday reportedly jumped to her death rom the third floor of a four-storey building at No 18 Ilodibe Street, Awada, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

News Express gathered that the 85-year-old woman who was being taken care of by a 32-year-old lady in her daughter’s house was mentally unstable.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Haruna Mohammed, said the care giver and other witnesses are helping the police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He said: “Around 5.20pm on Tuesday, there was a distress call to the  Awada Police Station that one Victoria Ilione, aged about 85, allegedly jumped to her death from the balcony of an apartment on the third floor of a four-storey building, where she stayed with her daughter at No. 18 Ilodibe Street, Awada.

“The Octogenarian was reported to be having some mental challenges and had her movement restricted.

“She was at home with her caregiver, one Judith Amumuche, 32, at the time of the alleged incident.

“The care giver and other witnesses are helping the police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Mohammed further said that by the time police arrived the scene of the incident, one Benedicta Ikediaso, the daughter of the deceased, resident of 3-3 Housing Estate, Onitsha had taken the corpse away to an unknown destination.

According to him, only blood stains were seen at the scene.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police (CP) John Abang has called on members of the public, especially those giving care to the aged, to apply extra caution when handling them on order to avert similar ugly incidents.
