Groups under the aegis of Arewa Consultative Youth Movement (ACYM) and Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) have insisted that power would shift from the North to another region of the country in 2023.

AYA, at a press conference addressed by the Speaker, Mohammed Salihu Danlami said that for the North to want to retain power beyond 2023 is mischievous and wicked and should be resisted by all and sundry, adding power should shift from the North to the South-South region preferably.

This was just as the youth assembly averred that it would be unfair for the north to want to retain power beyond 2023 and that the north should in the spirit of fairness and justice relinquish power to the South – South come 2023.

The youths said their decision to shop for a South-South candidate between the age bracket of 40-50 years was borne out of the fact the northerners eyeing the seat are well above the age bracket, adding the region had enjoyed the number one national seat for too long.

According to the text of the ACYM, which was read by its spokesman, Abdullahi Balarabe, the group averred, “We the members of the Arewa Consultative Youth Movement have followed with interest, noting how the leadership of this country has been concentrated in the North for too long.

“Despite the erroneous clinging to power by the Northern elite, issues of religious discrimination and tribal or ethnic sentiments have remained the order of the day. The need for us to be introspective and proactive on issues has now warranted us to state clearly without equivocation that we are calling for a return to the South-South presidency.

“This has now become the central theme of our collective discourse henceforth, and we will continue to clamour for it despite seeming manifestation of tribal configuration that has taken over our value system and caused by bad leadership over the years.

He said the movement further stressed that such anomalies have stunted the country’s growth as a nation since independence, which it credited to mis-governance occasioned by the selection of favoured incompetent persons into the helm of affairs. (Leadership)
