Nine officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service have been suspended following their involvement in the case relating to the activities of an internet fraud inmate, Hope Olusegun Aroke currently serving a prison term in Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Lagos.

The officers’ suspension was  approved by the Management Board of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services, under the Federal Ministry of Interior.

A statement by the spokesman of the Correctional Service, Francis Enobore, said the suspension of the officials was based on the preliminary report of the investigation panel set up by the Controller General of the Service, Ja’afaru Ahmed.

The officers were indicted of complicity in the scandal, the statement added.

The statement reads:  “The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) has approved the suspension of three officers and six other ranks of the Nigerian Correctional Service implicated in the alleged internet fraud, suspected to have been perpetrated by Hope Olusegun Aroke, an inmate serving a term of imprisonment in Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Lagos.

“This is based on the preliminary report of the investigation panel earlier constituted by the Controller General of the Service, Jaáfaru Ahmed which indicted the officers of complicity in the scandal.

“The Controller General who handed down the suspension order, noted that the task of correcting maladjusted persons in the society requires a measure of moral rectitude to make positive impact on offenders in custody.”
