Ogidi and Ogbunike communities in Oyi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, were on Friday evening smeared with the blood of youths embroiled in cult war.
It was gathered that about five young men were killed in the course of the clash.
One was gunned down in Ogbunike, the country home of Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano, wife of the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, two were shot in Ogidi while the other two were killed at a yet-to-be identified location.
A reliable source told News Express that two rival cults, Supreme Vikings Confraternity (Bagas) and Aye, were involved in the superiority contest.
Though the remote cause of the killings could not be ascertained at the time of filling this report, the police in Anambra said its rapid response teams were able to bring the situation under control.
Reacting to the deadly clashes, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed, said that about three persons were either shot dead instantly or fatally wounded and were confirmed dead by medical personnel on arrival at the hospital.
He said: “It was a cult clash. They equally shot two others at Ogidi. Police patrol teams rushed to the scene and took the victims to Iyenu Hospital for medical attention but were certified dead on arrival.”
He said that efforts have been intensified to apprehend perpetrators in order to bring them to justice.
