Aka Ikenga, the Igbo think tank, has advised Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to cancel the controversial polling units he announced for the 2015 general elections or prepare for his downfall.
“We in Aka Ikenga can state without any equivocation, that Prof Atahiru Jega has stepped on the proverbial banana peels. His only option, if he wants to avoid falling (and thereby maintain a good name) is to step back. It is mindboggling that the erudite Prof will want to change the goal posts in the middle of a “game”. Nigerians have since gone for revalidation; fresh voter registration etc and now they only await the election proper. Nothing more is expected of INEC beyond maintaining the status quo,” the group said this morning in a statement in Lagos.
Continuing, Aka Ikenga said in the statement jointly signed by the President General, Chief (Barr) Goddy Uwazuruike, and Secretary General, Barr. U.P.E Nnaji: “We demand that INEC tows the path of wisdom and common sense by maintaining the status quo! The previous Chairmen of INEC wisely avoided this pitfall. Jega should learn from them.
“We state, without any fear of contradiction that Jega is overheating the polity by this reckless move to distort the electoral map of Nigeria.
“The only course of action open to Prof A. Jega is to wisely cancel the creation of those extra polling booths he has created.
“We have spoken.”
