The Catholic Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, this morning showed his humanitarian side by pardoning a his former butler who is serving an 18-month jail sentence for stealing confidential papers.
The Pope presented a surprise Christmas gift to Paolo Gabriele when he visited him in prison to personally inform him of the decision to pardon him, the Vatican said in a statement.
Gabriele was last October found guilty of stealing and copying the Pope’s documents and leaking them to an Italian journalist. He claimed to have acted out of love for the Church but the defence was dismissed by the Vatican court, which sent him to prison.
News of his pardon was broken by a Vatican statement that read: “This morning the Holy Father Benedict XVI visited Paolo Gabriele in prison in order to confirm his forgiveness and to inform him personally of his acceptance of Mr. Gabriele’s request for pardon.”
