Wife of Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, on Thursday said that special education for girls would help equip and guarantee bright future for girls in the face of multifaceted challenges confronting them globally.

The International Day of the Girl Child is an annual occasion celebrated on October 11 to promote girl empowerment and fulfillment of their rights while also highlighting the challenges they face globally as females.

Mrs. Obiano who advocated for special girl child education at the commemoration of International Day of the girl-child explained that it was only through education that girl’s empowerment and fulfillment of their human rights could be achieved.

She noted that modern society was constantly faced with challenges which has ultimately led to breakdown of values.

According to her, such breakdown have given rise to societal issues like trafficking, child marriage, gender based violence and access to services regarding puberty and sexual health.

Her words: “Education and enlightenment remain the most effective tool for assuring safety of the girl child.

“The average girl-child is the most vulnerable and easily targeted by predators. It is our duty as parents and guardians to continuously teach and equip them with survival tips at home and also ensure that they get the best education.

“As a young girl, I learnt the rudiments of housekeeping and necessary etiquettes and more by staying close to my mother and those have been my guiding principle through life journey.”

She urged parents to remain steadfast in their commitment to the well being of the girl and not to be deterred by any form of survival challenges that may confront them.
