Twenty-four-year-old Oluchukwu, an indigene of Ebonyi State has allegedly been rejected by her family for turning down their demand to sell her baby boy who she delivered out of wedlock.
News Express gathered that the family of Oluchukwu had asked her to abort the pregnancy when they found out she was with a child but she refused, and instead, ran away from their home in Awka-Etiti, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
She was, however, discovered by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Safenest, which took her under their care till she put to bed.
Speaking at a seminar organised by Safenest, the Executive Director of the NGO, Mrs. Oluchukwu Okukwuenyem, said that upon Oluchukwu’s delivery, she contacted her family to break the good news, but she was rather advised to sell the baby for her upkeep and be sure not to return to the family with it.
She said: “We were so amazed when we learnt of this and have taken it upon ourselves to take care of her and the baby. She is currently in a location we put her. We do not want to release her exact location but I can tell you, she is doing well.
“How much will she sell the baby that can assuage her sufferings nine months?”
Okukwuenyem explained that within a year of the operation of her NGO, she has discovered that most families were threatened by very flimsy issues that sometimes derail to serious problems like division, divorce and even murder.
Okukwuenyem commended the Anambra State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its pro-activeness in tackling drug-related issues in the state. She blamed the abuse of substances like hard drugs and alcohol for much of the violence in families.
A guest speaker at the event, His Royal Highness, Dr. Emeka Ilouno, a medical doctor and Chief Medical Director of Madonna Hospital, gave a lecture on cervical and prostate cancers.
