Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of legendary late former Ghanaian President, Kwame Nkrumah, has failed in her bid to retain her seat in the country’s parliament.
Running on the platform of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) – of which she is National Chairman – Madam Samia, 52, became an MP in 2008 after unseating Mr. Lee Ocran of the National Democratic Convention (NDC) for the Jomoro constituency seat.
However, the NDC recaptured the seat yesterday through its candidate, Wing Commander Francis Anaman, a retired officer of the Ghana Airforce, who scored 21,651 votes as against Ms Nkrumah’s 18,110, according to results released by Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
One of Africa’s best known female politicians, Samia is the first Ghanaian woman to lead a major political party.
