The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Friday released a preliminary report on what it calls the “devastating” effect of flood in 12 frontline states.

They include: Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Edo, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Benue, Adamawa, Taraba, Rivers and Bayelsa states.

The report revealed that 77, 460 persons were displaced in 50 local governments that were affected by the flood.

It added that 151 persons sustained several degrees of injury, while 70 persons were confirmed dead and 3,544 houses partially or totally destroyed by the flood in the affected states.

The agency also revealed that 60,208 hectares of agricultural land were destroyed or damaged by floods in the states.

NEMA, on Tuesday, declared the flood situation in the four states of Anambra, Delta, Kogi and Niger states, a national disaster, and reported that 327, 052 persons were so far affected in the several other states that had experienced the natural disaster.

The agency, in a statement released in Abuja, regretted that only N3 billion had been made available to cater to flood victims, out of the N12 billion required.

It appealed to Nigerians to assist the disaster victims with temporary shelter, food and non-food items, hygiene kits, family items, mosquito nets and medicines, which are among their most urgent needs.
