The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State is dangling its governorship ticket at the embattled governor of the state, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, Daily Trust can report.
This followed the uncertainty over his second term ambition as his fate currently hangs in the balance in the All Progressives Congress (APC) where he is being challenged by one of his aides, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Sanwo-Olu is believed to be backed by the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who is said to be unyielding in restoring his support for Ambode.
Ambode had obtained the expression of interest and nomination forms of the APC but he would have to face a tough direct primary election with his arch-rival.
Prominent members of Tinubu’s inner caucus attended the formal declaration of intention by Sanwo-Olu on Sunday.
Investigations by Daily Trust showed that the opposition PDP had commenced moves to take advantage of the division in the APC to actualize its ambition to take over governance of Lagos State.
This, sources said, was by offering the ticket to Ambode who is believed to enjoy the support of the masses in the state.
A strong member of the PDP told Daily Trust, yesterday, the party leadership was exploring the option of offering the ticket to Ambode.
“Having somebody like Ambode contesting in our party would be a great deal for us and we are working towards that. From the look of things, the fate of Ambode has been sealed in APC.
“He is very unlikely to get the ticket of the party though he has obtained the nomination form,” the source said and pleaded anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on the issue.
“As I am talking to you, it is not official yet but we are working towards that; you just wait and see the developments as they unfold,” he added.
But another PDP member said Ambode was yet to reach out to the party leaders either directly or through a proxy.
“Since he has not reached out to us, we are also studying his body language because what we were told again is that the APC leaders might eventually reconcile and hand him (Ambode) the ticket,” he said.
When contacted, PDP spokesman, Taofiq Gani, said the party was ready to receive Ambode if he was willing to join the party, saying he would add value to the party.
Efforts to get Ambode’s reaction were unsuccessful. The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kehinde Bamgbetan who was contacted by our correspondent, did not respond to our enquiry as at press time.
