There was pandemonium in Adebayo area of Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Monday evening as gunshots shattered the peace in the area.
Conflicting reports trailed the incident as one had it that suspected supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) attacked the secretariat of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Ayo Fayose, while another account had it that the convoy of the state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, said to have been returning to Ado Ekiti from a campaign tour, was attacked by PDP supporters.
A member of the Fayose campaign group, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, claimed while speaking on the telephone, that members of the governor’s convoy attacked the secretariat of the PDP candidate, saying shots were fired at and shattered windows and windscreens of vehicles parked in the premises.
Adelusi claimed that the attack was unprovoked and that it was meant to cause panic among the people in order to create an atmosphere of fear.
But the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Fayemi, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, in a statement said “The convoy of Ekiti State governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was on Monday attacked in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by suspected thugs working for the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr. Ayo Fayose. The attack occurred around 6pm when the Governor and his supporters were returning to Ado-Ekiti from a campaign rally in Ekiti East Local Government Area of the state.
“The thugs, numbering about 100 suddenly emerged from Fayose’s Campaign Office, throwing stones and bottles at the governor’s vehicle and vehicles belonging to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who accompanied the governor on the campaign tour.
“But for the governor who restrained his security aides and party supporters from retaliating, there would have been some casualties in the attack that lasted a few minutes. Some APC loyalists, however, sustained minor injuries in the melee, while some vehicles had their windscreens smashed by stones thrown by the rampaging thugs.”
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in the state did not yield results as he did not pick this call and didn’t call back.
