The life of an eight-year-old girl, Oluebube Nwanedo, was on Friday cut short following a massive flood that took over Egerton area of the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, after a heavy downpour.
The flood which also damaged belongings of residents of the area, snatched the life of the teenager while she was returning home from Block Rosary Center located at Benjamin's lane.
Narrating her ordeal, the mother of the deceased, Mrs Amaka Nwanedo, said, "My little daughter was on her way back home from a Block Rosary Centre at Benjamin's lane after a heavy downpour when her slippers slipped off her legs and fell into the flooded drainage.
“In an attempt to retrieve the slippers, she was swept off by the flood.”
According to her, efforts made by passersby to save Oluebube from being swept away by the flood yielded no result as nature’s held tight to its swallow.
She said that Oluebube’s lifeless body was later found after a long search on Saturday in a drainage channel along old market road.
The deceased, who hailed from Umuezike in Orlu local government area, Imo State, was said to be a primary four pupil of Holy Child Primary school Onitsha and the first child of her parents.
News Express learnt that the deceased corpse was immediately taken home for burial after it was recovered.
