The Muhammadu Buhari administration has been receiving flaks on social media after it became known that one of those it yesterday announced as Board Chairmen died over a year ago.
What is more, the Federal Government sent a delegation to his burial in Delta State and also issued a condolence message. The man, late Senator Francis Okpozo, was announced as Chairman of the Nigeria Press Council (NPC) in a statement issued Friday by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, disclosing the appointment of 209 board chairmen and 1,258 members of government-owned agencies and parastatals.
“SO SAD . . . Over one year after his death, President Buhari appoints Senator Francis Okpozo as Chairman, Nigeria Press Council,” wrote Sunday Areh on Facebook. “There was a Federal government delegation during the Senator’s burial. PMB is slow to act. That list was compiled over a year ago.”
Richard Akinnola II asked: “But why can’t persons like Chief Duro Onabule or Ray Ekpu or Dan Agbese be appointed Chairman of the Nigerian Press Council, instead of a dead man? Does it mean no prior consent or consultation was sought and done before some of these announcements, which could have averted this kind of embarrassment? Na wah o.”
On his part, Yomi Odunuga said: “This is very bad. To make matters worse, the list was kept in top secret until it was released very late last night. It’s sheer ineptitude.”
Other commentators have similarly excoriated the administration for the blunder.
The Presidency has yet to respond to the criticisms.
