The youths of old Aguata Union (OAU) in Anambra State have vowed to resist any move by political elders in Aguata Local Government Area to sell the zone to the highest bidder in the November 18 governorship election in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the youths in Awka, a youth leader from Ezira in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state, Comrade Emmanuel Agu called on their elders to have a rethink.
Agu, who said they have had enough of the sell out had at an earlier meeting of stakeholders from the zone demanded for reasons why the zone should settle for anything less or support the second term bid of the incumbent Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, who had performed below expectation.
The youth leader decried what he described as the imposition of a candidate on the people of Old Aguata without seeking their consent.
His words: “We refuse to continue to tow the line of the ignorance of the old men in our union, who collect money and sell our collective birthright.
“We are tired of being relegated to the deputy position.”
Agu regretted that rather than support a candidate like Mr. Godwin Ezeemo who is from the zone, the elders were working to endorse an external person who is “incapable of delivering quality dividends of democracy.”
On his part, Mr. Ugochukwu Onyenzoue, condemned the elder’s attitude of imposing a candidate on the people saying: “People’s consent was not sort but they have orchestrated the gathering to impose a candidate on them.”
He said that since the inception of democratic rule in Nigeria, Old Aguata has never gone beyond deputising in government adding that a majority of Old Aguata youths believe Ezeemo is their opportunity to break that jinx.
He said that they would hold their elders responsible if the chance of taking the number one position elude them.
He added: “We must stand with our own that is the spirit of Old Aguata Union.”
A youth from Uga area of the zone, Mr. Kelechi Ifejieme, called on the 45 communities that make up the Old Aguata Union to stand by their own in the forth coming election.
He described the acclaimed unanimous decision made during a meeting of major stakeholders of the Union at Amaokpala in Orumba North Local Government Area as untrue, saying that the majority of the people were not represented.
Ifejeme urged the traditional rulers and President Generals of the zone, both past and present to show solidarity with their own.
He said: “Other zones are doing it, ours should not be different , let’s follow the steps of our ancestors by keeping to their goal of standing and watching each other’s back, Ezeemo is our choice let’s give him home front support.”
The youths condemned the stance of some people from the zone in supporting the incumbent Governor, Willie Obiano, describing them as enemies of the zone.
While naming the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Charles Soludo, former Governor of the State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, two former State Deputy Governors from the area, Dr. Okey Udeh and Mr. Emeka Sibeudu as the traitors in the zone, the youths called for a reschedule of the meeting of the zone.
