Immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has identified “many years of leadership failure” as the cause of the undying clamour of the restructuring of Nigeria. Obi spoke on Thursday at the News Express 5th Anniversary Lecture, at which he was Special Guest of Honour.
The former governor, represented by his Special Adviser, Barrister Valentine Obienyem, described was contributing to the theme of the Lecture, “National Unity and the Demand for Restructuring — A Governor’s Perspective”, delivered by the Guest Lecturer, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State.
On the imperatives of structuring, Obi maintained that “the agitations in Nigeria, including the call for restructuring, are the offspring of many years of leadership failure in the country.”
While voting for national unity, Obi, however, took the position of late Igbo Leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, that Nigeria needs sincere unity as witnessed in marriage and “not the unity of Jonah in the belly of the whale.”
The former governor thanked News Express Publisher, Mr. Isaac Umunna, “for keeping faith and maintaining the highest standard of ethics that has seen New Express grow from strength to strength.”
Obi said that journalism requires patience, perseverance and the realisation that the profession is about disseminating true news.
Referring to Kant’s moral laws within, Obi lamented that Nigerians, even elders, allow themselves to be used to propagate false and injurious news. He specifically referred to a recent programme on Channels TV that featured Chief Dan Ulasi, who, according to him, was simply paid to destroy another person’s name.
