Soldiers deployed to the streets of Abia State in South-East Nigeria will start a gradual withdrawal from the streets of the state tomorrow, Friday, September 15, 2017.

The State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, made the announcement in the state capital, Umuahia, as tension escalated over the alleged excesses of the soldiers deployed on Sunday to checkmate the separatist Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB).

It is not yet clear how this will affect the controversial month-long Operation Python Dance II military exercise in the five South-East states scheduled to begin tomorrow.

The exercise has been widely condemned as being unnecessary since there is no unusual security threat in Abia.
