Boko Haram militants have kidnapped three women in Cameroon’s Far North Region bordering Nigeria, a military official said on Thursday.

The incident took place during an attack launched by Boko Haram in the town of Gakara on Wednesday night, Gen. Bouba Dobekreo, commander of a joint military operation in the region told Anadolu Agency.

“The abductees were taken to Kerawa in Nigeria by the armed men,” a member of a vigilance committee said on condition of anonymity citing security reasons.

Cameroon’s Far North Region has been severely affected by attacks, raids and kidnappings perpetrated by the Boko Haram militant group.

Less than two weeks ago, the militant group also abducted four women who had gone to fetch water.

Approximately 26 million people in the Lake Chad region have been affected by the Boko Haram violence and more than 2.6 million displaced, according to UN Refugee Agency.
