•Embattled Anambra Speaker, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu.

The Anambra State House of Assembly was today consumed with palpable fear as members moved to impeach the Speaker, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu.

With no fewer than 28 members of the house (APGA members) present at the hallowed chambers for the business of the day, the Speaker got wind of the move and escaped with the mace, the symbol of authority of the legislative house.

Information reaching News Express has it that the Speaker decided to abscond with the mace after observing that her members were bent on carrying out their mission.

After the bell alerting members of the coming in of the Speaker into the chambers rang severally but the Speaker was nowhere to be found, the Majority Leader of the house, Hon. Victor Okoye, called for the adjournment of house to Tuesday, April 11.

However, the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, visited the house unannounced and without the usual blaring of siren, apparently to forestall the impeachment move.

It was also gathered that the governor later addressed the legislators who were present, pleading with them to sway other legislators from the impeachment.

Reacting to the issue, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Legislative Matters, Prince Oliver Okpara, said there was no need for panic.

He described the development as the beauty of democracy.
