The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has commenced a full scale de-silting and cleaning of all major canals within the state.
Sole Administrator of the agency, Bro. Felix Obuah, said the action became necessary to forestall the usual flooding associated with early rains in the state.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Jerry Needam, the Sole Administrator said that cleaning of the canals and waterways would make way for easy and free flow of water after heavy rainfall.
Obuah who explained that work was already in progress at major canals and waterways in Port Harcourt, added that the exercise had reached advanced stage at Mini Waja Creek from Rumuola by Aba Road through Stadium Road, Rumuola By-pass to Mummy B Road and up to Rumukalagbor, and into Trans-Amadi Creek.
“This activity is on-going in the major canals while RIWAMA has equally commenced the de-silting and drains in Agip Estate, GRA Phases 1, 2 and 3,” Obuah said, adding that similar activity was also taking place at Ikwerre Road, Old GRA, Woji Road among others.
The Sole Administrator further disclosed that equipments have been deployed to Eneka, Eliozu and Mini-Ekere Waterways to clean the canal leading to Rumuogba Estate and terminate at Rumuobiakani.
Obuah reaffirmed that RIWAMA would do all within its legal framework to keep Port Harcourt and its environs clean, safe and healthy, calling on residents and those doing businesses in the state to support efforts of the State Government by ensuring that their surroundings are kept clean at all times.
