Outrage in the Senate over shabby treatment of Super Falcons, other victorious sport stars

Piqued by the maltreatment unleashed on the Super Falcons, boxers and athletes, some lawmakers have frowned at the posture of the government and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), calling for urgent intervention to ease the burden on the sports men and women.

The Senate, in a session presided over by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Wednesday Plenary, congratulated the girls and urged the NFF and Sports Minister, Mr. Solomon Dalung, to do the needful so as to encourage a winning habit.

The argument however, ensued on the floor of the Senate after a Point of Order raised by Senator Obinna Ogba, in respect to the treatment meted out on the victorious Super Falcons who are stranded and can’t go home.

Obinna decried the unfair treatment on the girls despite winning a record 8th AFCON crown.

Some other Senators who went against the act were: Senators Oluremi Tinubu, Godswill Akpabio and Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce, in his reaction, lamented that “it is a disgrace what is happening to our Super Falcons, Boxers and other athletes. It is a pity that we care about structures but we don’t care about people in this country. Governments in Nigeria do not care about human beings. They only care about awarding contracts,” he lamented.

The NFF has reportedly said there was no money to pay the Super Falcons their winning bonuses and outstanding allowances.
