The Nigerian Senate during plenary today directed the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to immediately stop the planned data tariff hike which was to take effect on December 1st, until some parties involved in the services are consulted.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, while giving his comment on the development said: “It is very important that we protect the people that brought us here. This is the height of irresponsibility by NCC at this time without any consultation from the statistics it is almost four times the price.”

This was followed by a motion raised by the Deputy Senate Leader, Balla Ibn N’Allah on the increase in data tariffs by the telecommunication networks over policies of the NCC.

During plenary on Wednesday, other Senators equally condemned the increase of data tariffs by the service providers.

Senate therefore mandated its Committee on Communications to carry out thorough oversight on the process to ensure that Nigerians are carried along and warned that the Committee must ensure that Nigerians are not short changed.

It further advised the Committee to investigate the allegations of failure of the service provider.
