KDI Executive Director, Bukola Idowu
The Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), a civil society organisation, has unveiled a new digital platform aimed at tracking human rights abuses, electoral violations and restrictions on civic space across Nigeria.
The platform, known as Naija Civic Space, was launched in Abuja under the Building Resilient Spaces (BRS) project to strengthen civic engagement, improve incident reporting and promote accountability.
Speaking at the launch, KDI Executive Director, Bukola Idowu, said the initiative would provide citizens, civil society groups and other stakeholders with an avenue to document cases of abuse, intimidation and violations, particularly during elections.
According to him, Nigeria can no longer ignore actions that undermine democratic participation and citizens’ rights.
“We cannot continue to sweep issues under the carpet. People responsible for violating rights must be held accountable,” he said.
Idowu expressed concern over incidents allegedly recorded during ongoing political party primaries, including intimidation, violence and misuse of state institutions against aspirants and party members.
“We have seen gunshots, intimidation and abuse of power during the primaries, but there is hardly any accountability or proper documentation of such incidents,” he said.
He added that the platform would help ensure that unresolved cases remain in public focus until justice is served.
Governance Adviser at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Mathew Ayibakubo, described the initiative as an important tool for strengthening democratic participation and responsive governance.
He said protecting citizens’ rights to speak, organise and participate freely remained critical to accountable leadership and strong democratic institutions. (Daily Trust)
