A member of House of Representatives, representing Ibadan North East/South East Federal Constituency, Hon. Dapo Lam Adesina, has decried the dilapidated state of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, the first stadium in Africa and called on the House to, as a matter of urgency, rise to its renovation.
Adesina, while rising at the plenary on Thursday at the Green Chamber, to move a motion on “The Dilapidated State of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan”, argued that “the stadium being the first in Africa must not be abandoned as it is shameful and ridiculous.”
He added that “provision has been made for the restructuring and renovation in the 2016 budget, yet the job has been abandoned.”
Adesina, however, drew the attention of the Ministry of Sports, National Sports Commission and other agencies in charge to the state of dilapidation of the stadium and advised them to quickly look at means by which a process of rehabilitation can be embarked upon.
The Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun, who presided over the session, advised that the amount of money meant to refurbish the stadium should be recaptured again in the 2017 budget because of the budgetary processes of the nation which is slow, and stepped down the motion.
Equally, Honorable Adesina informed the House of the fatal accident that occurred few days ago at Oja Oba in Ibadan, where several lives were lost and the House observed a minute silence in honour of the departed souls.
