Collation of results is in progress in seven states of the federation where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday conducted re-run State and national Assembly elections. The affected states are Benue, Kaduna, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi and Taraba.

Elections in Langtang South, Plateau State, were cancelled for security reasons while that of Imo has been postponed indefinitely owing to violent protest.

The re-run elections were ordered by the Appeal Court in close to twenty constituencies of the seven states after voiding the results of the April 11, 2015 ballot in the affected areas.

The fiercest of yesterday’s contests took place in Benue South Senatorial District of Benue State, where former Senate President David Mark of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Comrade Daniel Onjeh of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were locked in a close race.

A report this morning in The Nation said unofficial results showed that while Mark surged ahead of Onjeh in Otukpo, Apa, Agatu and Opokwu local government areas, the APC flag bearer was leading in Obi, Oju and Ohimimi local government areas.

The report said the election was generally peaceful although there were reports of pockets of violence in a few places.

“Turn out by voters was low,” the paper reported, adding that “both parties accused each other of thuggery and rigging.”
