Moderate to poor visibility to prevail across Nigeria today —NiMET

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) said Sunday night that the North-easterly wind blowing from the Sahara desert has continued to transport large quantity of dust particles into the country, leading to reduction in horizontal visibility. On the weather forecast for today, Monday, December 28, 2015, NiMET said: Observation has shown the presence of sandstorm in some parts of the northern region as a result, the following weather conditions are very likely in various parts of the country:

NORTHERN STATES: Katsina, Kano, Maiduguri, Nguru and Yelwa should experience reduction in visibility value to less than 1,000m in some places. Night time temperatures over the area should be between 12-16o C (degree Celsius).

CENTRAL STATES: Moderate visibility due to dust haze should affect places like Abuja, Kaduna, Bida, Minna, Ilorin, Bauchi and environ. Low visibility values of less than 1,000m may also be experienced in some locations. Night time temperature range should be between 12-18o

C (degree Celsius).                    

SOUTHERN STATES: Dusty atmosphere over places like Benin, Awka, Enugu Port Harcourt should reduce horizontal visibility to 1-3km. Night time temperature over the area should be between 14-18o C (degree Celsius).

NOTE: During this period of the year, the atmosphere is usually very dry and windy. Citizens should avoid substances that may ignite easily to reduce incidences of fire outbreaks. Flight operations may be disrupted due to poor visibility in some airports across the country.
