The All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate for the 2015 governorship in Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor has said that President Muhammadu Buhari would do everything within his powers to correct the ills all Ministries, Departments and Agencies through forensic auditing, blocking of financial leakages and prosecuting corrupt officials who are found guilty to have plunged the country into debts either locally or internationally.
Emerhor who is pursuing a governorship mandate at the tribunal in Asaba, the Delta State capital, made the statement through his media aide, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe.
Emerhor said all financial crimes committed by both past and present government officials would never go unpunished, pledging President Buhari’s commitment to bring all culprits to justice.
He described the 50 per cent cut in the salaries of President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as a pointer to the fact that other senior public officers and political office holders would have to adjust and be ready to make similar sacrifice.
He noted that the desire of Buhari to curb excesses in public spending necessitated the cut in his salaries.
Besides public spending, Olorogun Emerhor said it was also to save enough material and financial resources to grow the nation’s economy and embark on a holistic socio-economic remodeling of Nigeria to meet the yearnings of all Nigerians.
According to him, Buhari, being a proactive and transparent leader, deserves commendation from Nigerians for also ordering the immediate closure of a reasonable number of bank accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and in the same token ordered the sharing of taxes from the Nigerian Liquefied Gas Company (LNG) to the three tiers of government, a development that was alien to the nation’s financial management under the PDP led government.
Consequently, he frowned at those who had consistently attacked President Buhari for being slow in appointing ministers for the federal cabinet, saying Buhari cannot make hasty decisions in selecting who becomes part of his cabinet.
He said the attackers of President Buhari should know that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wrecked the socio-economic boat of the nation which is why the government of the day at national level needed time to scrutinise the books and accounts of the immediate past Goodluck Jonathan administration before recruiting new hands to run the system.
Emerhor posited that Buhari’s crusade against corruption “will not be in a hurry to do the needful but will be systematic in ascertaining who is qualified to sit in his cabinet.” He noted that it is expected that after 16 years of massive corruption and economic sabotage slammed on the nation by the PDP government, the APC led government will dig deep to ensure sanity and good governance in order to restore the nation’s fractured image in the comity of nations.
Emerhor also said chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Nasiru Gumi, has demonstrated high level of integrity and unequalled legal skills at the pre-trial stages of the petition before him.
He said that hopes are high that justice will be done to free Delta State from crude politics where rigging and electoral malpractices held sway for 16 years.
