The tradition of upsets in the Federations Cup continued Wednesday evening in Benin when amateur outfits Remo Stars eliminated defending champions and Premier League giants Enyimba International of Aba 4-2 (after extra time).
In a pulsating round of 32 encounter watched by an appreciative crowd at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Ogun State side Remo matched Enyimba in all departments of the game. The underdogs deservedly went ahead in the 38th minute when super sub Nonso Paul ran onto a through pass from the midfield and found the net with a shot to the far right of a despairing Enyimba keeper.
The People’s Elephants came out in a desperate search of an equaliser in the second half. Their efforts were rewarded as they drew level with a beautiful free kick in the early minutes of the second stanza.
Both teams failed to find the net again at the end of regulation time. In the ensuing shootouts, Enyimba lost three of their kicks while Remo converted all but one of the penalties.
At some other venues, Edo State representatives BJ Foundation and Kukuruku Dragons experienced contrasting fortunes. BJ defeated Sportlite FC of Kano 3-1 to seal a place in the round of 16. Kukuruku Dragons however fell to seasoned campaigners Rangers International of Enugu 1-3.
