Chairman of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), King Amalate Turner, has endorsed Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Seriake Dickson for a second term in office.
King Turner, who made the assertion in an interview with newsmen in Yenagoa, premised his endorsement of the governor on his numerous achievements in less than 4 years in office.
The foremost traditional ruler said every gang up against Dickson will fail.
“I cannot pin point any reason why the governor should not be given a second chance. Nobody has told me exactly what Dickson has done that would make him not deserve a second term. That is the truth, but I am aware that people are ganging up against Dickson but that may not necessarily mean that they have an edge over him,” he said.
According to him, most of the people who were opposing Dickson were those who had contested in the 2012 governorship election and lost.
The paramount ruler of Opume, in Ogbia LGA, stressed that what was happening in Bayelsa was not strange but rather the normal business of politics.
Turner compared the political scenario in the state to a relay race whereby everybody was struggling to get to the top, adding that this was not the first time people would be opposing an incumbent government.
“Most of the people rising against Dickson are people who had contested election against Dickson or even other people. Most of them are people that are already serving either in the National Assembly or State Assembly and wanted to come back because nobody ever gets tired of being in power. Some of them have been legislators for the past 16 years and wanted to continue as if it is a civil service job that has a period of retirement,” he stated.
Turner contended that if a politician had served in the State House of Assembly and moved up to the two chambers of the National assembly, such a politician ought to look for something else to do rather than feel that the position in the Assembly remained his birthright.
