Young Democratic Party (YDP) said it is not and will not be part of any plan by any group to raise support for Prof.  Mahmood Yakubu for the ongoing screening exercise at the National Assembly to return him to the position of INEC chairman for a second term.

A statement issued on Thursday by the party, signed by the National Chairperson, Georgina Dakpokpo, said while some individuals were at the National Assembly today in solidarity with Prof. Yakubu for his screening exercise for the position of INEC Chairman, The Young Democratic Party and I were not a part of this action because it our firm belief that a Political Party should not be reduced to canvassing support for an INEC Chairman who is supposed to be an unbiased actor in our elections.

According to the statement, “Aside from the recent elections in Edo and Ondo, the general elections presided over by the Prof. has been fraught with court cases, a distinct sign of the animosity and distrust that greeted the general elections, over which he presided.

“I implore the members of the Senate to kindly overcome the pull of personal interests to National interests,” the statement added.
