Onyekachukwu before she was rescued by policemen
A team of policemen from Ikotun Police Station in Lagos have rescued a 14 years old girl who said she was in chains for about one month before neighbours were attracted by her call for help.
Her rescue was effected after several hours of efforts as she was locked up in an apartment at number 21 Serebe Street, in the Ikotun area of Lagos.
The detained girl could not be rescued when two policemen first visited. However, upon reinforcement, a second team, having obtained clearance from higher authorities forced the door to the apartment open and rescued her. She was subsequently taken to the Police Station in the area amidst outrage as a huge crowd gathered at the neighbourhood.
But there was a dramatic twist when neighbours sighted the girl later in the evening. She was said to have escaped from Police custody and returned home to pick some of her personal belongings.
Policemen attached to the station who spoke on the condition of anonymity told our reporter that the matter was settled when the girl's father reported at the station that same night. Although there were speculations that she might have gone to stay with her grandmother in the Orile area of Lagos, where she claimed to have always visited, one of the neighbours who spoke to our reporter said she was in the habit of being away from home for weeks without anyone knowing her whereabouts.
News Express had exclusively reported on Wednesday that the Junior Secondary (JS)1 girl, who gave her name as Onyekachukwu from Delta State, said she was chained and padlocked on the neck and legs by her father to restrain her from going to visit her grandmother.
